About Central African Republic

The Central African Republic is a landlocked nation in the heart of Africa, with Bangui serving as its capital and largest city. The country has a population of approximately 5.5 million people and gained independence from France in 1960. It is one of the world's least developed countries, with an economy largely dependent on subsistence agriculture, forestry, and the export of diamonds, gold, and timber. The official languages are French and Sango, the latter serving as a national lingua franca. Despite its immense natural resource wealth, chronic political instability, repeated coups, and ongoing armed conflict have severely hampered development. The government exercises limited control over much of the territory, particularly in the north and east, where various armed groups remain active. In recent years, Russian-backed Wagner Group forces and later the Africa Corps have had a significant security presence supporting the government.

Geography and Landscape

The Central African Republic occupies a vast plateau at the heart of the African continent, bordered by Chad to the north, Sudan and South Sudan to the east, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo to the south, and Cameroon to the west. The terrain is dominated by a rolling savanna plateau averaging around 600 metres in elevation, cut through by several major river systems. The Ubangi River forms the southern border, eventually draining into the Congo River. In the northwest, the Yade Massif rises to higher elevations, while the northeast features semi-arid conditions blending toward the Sahel. The country lies entirely within the tropics, with a climate ranging from equatorial in the humid south to tropical savanna in the centre and semi-arid conditions further north. Dense rainforest covers the southwestern regions, providing habitat for forest elephants, lowland gorillas, and diverse birdlife. The Sangha Trinational protected area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, straddles the southwestern corner.

History

The territory of the Central African Republic has been inhabited for thousands of years, with evidence of Neolithic settlement and later migrations of Bantu-speaking peoples. In the 19th century the region suffered enormously from the slave trade, which depopulated large areas. French colonial forces arrived in the 1880s and 1890s, and the territory became known as Ubangi-Shari, forming part of French Equatorial Africa. Colonial rule was marked by brutal concessionary company practices and forced labour. The territory gained autonomy in 1958 and full independence on 13 August 1960, with David Dacko as its first president. The subsequent decades were defined by coups and authoritarian rule, most notoriously under Jean-Bédel Bokassa, who declared himself emperor in 1977. Democratic transitions in the 1990s were repeatedly undermined by violence. The Séléka rebellion of 2012–13 and subsequent anti-Balaka counter-insurgency plunged the country into a humanitarian catastrophe that continues to affect millions of displaced people today.
