About Thailand

Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia with a population of approximately 70 million people. It is a constitutional monarchy with King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) as head of state, and operates under a mixed democratic and military-influenced government structure following a 2014 coup. Bangkok is the capital and primate city, a dynamic megacity of over ten million inhabitants. Theravada Buddhism is central to Thai life and identity, with monks, temples (wats), and Buddhist festivals woven into the fabric of everyday society. The Thai language, with its own distinctive script, is the official language. Thailand is renowned globally for its cuisine, hospitality β€” encapsulated in the concept of "mai pen rai" (never mind, no worries) β€” and its rich traditions of classical dance, silk weaving, and intricate crafts. Tourism is a major economic pillar alongside manufacturing, particularly electronics and automobiles, and agriculture, especially rice and rubber. Thailand has never been colonised by a European power, a source of considerable national pride.

Geography and Landscape

Thailand covers approximately 513,000 square kilometres and is divided into several distinct regions. The north is mountainous, with forested ranges forming part of the broader Indochinese highlands; Doi Inthanon, at 2,565 metres, is the country's highest peak. The central region is the broad, flat Chao Phraya River basin, the agricultural heartland and home to Bangkok. The north-east β€” known as Isan β€” is a large, semi-arid plateau bordered by the Mekong River along the Lao frontier. The south is a narrow peninsula extending towards Malaysia, with coastlines on both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, featuring spectacular karst limestone scenery, white-sand beaches, and coral reefs. Major rivers include the Chao Phraya and the Mekong, which forms much of the northern and north-eastern border. Thailand's climate is tropical, characterised by a monsoon season from May to October, a cool dry season from November to February, and a hot season from March to May.

History

Thailand β€” historically known as Siam β€” has a recorded history stretching back to the Sukhothai Kingdom, considered the first Thai state, founded in the thirteenth century. The Ayutthaya Kingdom (1351–1767) became a prosperous regional power and a major centre of trade, maintaining relations with European, Chinese, and Indian merchants. The Burmese sacked Ayutthaya in 1767, but the kingdom was quickly re-established under the Thonburi Kingdom and then the Chakri dynasty, which founded Bangkok in 1782 and continues to reign today. During the colonial era of the nineteenth century, Siam skilfully played European powers against one another, ceding border territories to French Indochina and British Burma while preserving its core sovereignty β€” the only country in mainland Southeast Asia never to be colonised. A bloodless coup in 1932 transformed the absolute monarchy into a constitutional monarchy. Thailand allied with Japan during the Second World War and later became a close US ally during the Cold War. The country has experienced numerous military coups since 1932 but has maintained periods of robust economic growth.
