About Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a country of approximately 7 million people in southeastern Europe, bordering Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey, with a Black Sea coastline to the east. Sofia is its capital and largest city. Bulgaria is a unitary parliamentary republic, a NATO member since 2004, and an EU member since 2007. It is the oldest state in Europe to have retained its original name since its founding in 681 AD. The official language is Bulgarian, written in Cyrillic script. The population has been declining steadily due to emigration and low birth rates. The economy has diversified significantly since the end of communism, with IT, tourism, and manufacturing as key drivers. Bulgaria is known for its rose oil production — it supplies the majority of the world's rose essential oil — its yogurt culture, and its rich folk traditions including the polyphonic singing style recognised by UNESCO.

Geography and Landscape

Bulgaria is divided into several distinct landscape zones. The Danube Plain in the north is fertile lowland extending to the Danube River, which forms most of the border with Romania. The Balkan mountain range (Stara Planina) crosses the country from west to east, reaching 2,376 metres at Botev Peak. South of the mountains lie the Thracian Plain and the Rhodope mountains, which extend into Greece. The Black Sea coast in the east offers beaches, lagoons, and nature reserves, and is a major tourist destination. The Rila and Pirin mountain ranges in the southwest contain Bulgaria's highest peak, Musala (2,925 m), and several glacial lakes. Major rivers include the Maritsa, the Iskar, and the Struma. Bulgaria has a temperate continental climate in the interior and a modified Mediterranean influence along the southern and coastal zones.

History

Thracians inhabited the territory for millennia before Greek colonisation and Roman conquest. The First Bulgarian Empire was founded in 681 AD after Bulgar tribes allied with Slavs defeated the Byzantine Empire. Tsar Simeon I (893–927) oversaw a golden age of culture and territorial expansion. Bulgaria fell to Byzantium, then to the Ottoman Empire in 1396, where it remained for almost five centuries. The April Uprising of 1876 and the subsequent Russo-Turkish War led to the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878. After two Balkan Wars and two World Wars, Bulgaria emerged as a communist state aligned with the Soviet Union in 1944. Communism ended peacefully in 1989 with the resignation of Todor Zhivkov after 35 years in power. Bulgaria joined NATO in 2004 and the EU in 2007, though economic and rule-of-law challenges persist.
