About Belarus

Belarus is a landlocked country of approximately 9.4 million people in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. Its capital is Minsk, also the largest city and an administrative hub for the Commonwealth of Independent States. Belarus is a presidential republic; Alexander Lukashenko has held power since 1994, making him Europe's longest-serving head of government. The country maintains close political and economic ties with Russia through the Union State and is heavily sanctioned by Western nations following the disputed 2020 election and state-sponsored repression of opposition. Belarusian and Russian are both official languages. The economy is largely state-controlled, with industry, potash exports, and services as pillars. Belarus has a high literacy rate and strong traditions in science, engineering, and the arts.

Geography and Landscape

Belarus is predominantly flat, with vast forests, wetlands, rivers, and thousands of lakes. It sits on the Eastern European Plain, with no significant mountain ranges. The Pripyat Marshes in the south are among the largest wetlands in Europe and a critical biodiversity reserve. Major rivers include the Dnieper, the Western Dvina (Daugava), the Neman, and the Pripyat, which drains into the Dnieper and eventually the Black Sea. The country is about 40 per cent forested, with the Bia?owie?a Forest — shared with Poland — protecting Europe's last primeval lowland forest and its iconic European bison. The climate is continental, with cold winters (average January temperatures around –6°C in Minsk), warm summers, and significant snowfall. Belarus has no coastline and no access to the sea.

History

The territory of modern Belarus was part of the medieval Principality of Polotsk, one of the earliest East Slavic states, before becoming part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It passed to Poland-Lithuania and later to the Russian Empire after the partitions of the eighteenth century. During the First World War, Belarus was briefly independent (Belarusian People's Republic, 1918) before becoming a Soviet republic. The Second World War was catastrophic: Belarus lost an estimated quarter of its population and suffered near-total destruction of many cities. The country recovered under Soviet rule, becoming a major industrial centre. Belarus declared sovereignty in 1990 and independence in 1991 following the dissolution of the USSR. Lukashenko came to power in 1994 and has maintained authoritarian rule, resisting democratisation. Mass protests erupted after the 2020 election but were suppressed.
