About Andorra

Andorra is a tiny landlocked co-principality in the eastern Pyrenees between France and Spain, with a population of about 77,000 — one of Europe's least populous states. Its capital, Andorra la Vella, is the highest capital city in Europe at roughly 1,023 metres above sea level. The country is jointly governed by two co-princes: the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France, an arrangement traceable to a 1278 feudal treaty. Andorra is not an EU member but uses the euro under a monetary agreement. It draws several million visitors annually, drawn by low taxes, duty-free shopping, and skiing across several resorts. The official language is Catalan, though French and Spanish are widely spoken. Despite its tiny size, Andorra has a high Human Development Index, near-universal literacy, and an economy dominated by tourism and retail, with a growing financial services sector.

Geography and Landscape

Andorra covers just 468 square kilometres of rugged Pyrenean terrain, with peaks exceeding 2,900 metres. The country is almost entirely mountainous, with narrow valleys carved by tributaries of the Gran Valira river. The Valira del Nord and Valira d'Orient converge at Andorra la Vella to form the Gran Valira, which exits into Spain. There is virtually no flat land outside town centres. Winters are cold and snowy, making the country a popular ski destination; summers are mild. Varied altitude creates distinct vegetation zones ranging from subalpine meadows and shrubland at height to oak and pine forests in the valleys. Andorra shares borders only with France to the north and Spain to the south and east.

History

Andorra's statehood rests on a paréage signed on 8 September 1278 between the Count of Foix and the Bishop of Urgell, establishing joint feudal sovereignty. France inherited the Count's rights through royal succession, and these eventually transferred to successive French heads of state. Andorra remained largely isolated for centuries, with an economy based on farming and cross-border smuggling. It was unoccupied during both world wars. In 1993 Andorra adopted its first written constitution, becoming a parliamentary co-principality and joining the United Nations. The country has since built a modern economy around tourism, duty-free retail, and banking. Andorra is working toward a formal association agreement with the European Union.
