About Tonga

Tonga is an archipelago kingdom in the South Pacific Ocean, lying approximately 800 kilometres east of Fiji and 1,800 kilometres northeast of New Zealand. The capital is Nuku?alofa, located on the main island of Tongatapu, and the population is approximately 100,000 people. Tonga is the only remaining monarchy in the Pacific and one of the few countries in the world never to have been formally colonised. It became a British protectorate in 1900 but retained its own monarchy and internal governance throughout, regaining full sovereignty in 1970. The current king is Tupou VI, who ascended to the throne in 2012. The country consists of 169 islands, of which 36 are inhabited. The economy relies significantly on remittances from Tongans living abroad, agriculture, fishing, and tourism. Tonga has a strong tradition of Christianity, introduced by Wesleyan missionaries in the nineteenth century, and the church plays a central role in social life.

Geography and Landscape

Tonga's 169 islands are divided into three main island groups from north to south: Vava'u, Ha'apai, and Tongatapu. The islands are of two main types: the western islands, which are higher and of volcanic origin, and the eastern islands, which are low-lying coral limestone platforms. The Tofua volcanic arc in the west includes active volcanoes such as Tofua and Late, as well as the remarkable submarine volcano Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai, which catastrophically erupted in January 2022 in one of the largest volcanic explosions recorded in modern times. Tongatapu, the main island, is flat and fertile, surrounded by coral reefs. The Ha'apai group consists of numerous low coral islands and atolls. Vava'u in the north is notable for its sheltered harbour and distinctive elevated terrain. The climate is tropical, warm and humid, with a cyclone season between November and April.

History

Tonga has been inhabited for approximately 3,000 years, with early Lapita people settling the islands around 800 BCE. The Tu'i Tonga Empire, one of the earliest and most extensive Polynesian maritime empires, reached its peak influence from around the tenth to the fifteenth centuries, with influence extending across much of the Pacific from Hawaii to Fiji. The first European contact was made by Dutch navigators Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire in 1616. British explorer James Cook visited on multiple occasions in the late eighteenth century and called Tonga the Friendly Islands. Wesleyan missionaries arrived in the 1820s and Christianity spread rapidly. King George Tupou I unified the islands and established a constitutional monarchy in 1875. Tonga became a British protectorate in 1900, though it retained its monarchy, and gained full independence within the Commonwealth in 1970. Democratic reforms were introduced in 2010, reducing the power of the nobility in parliament.
