About Guernsey

Guernsey is a British Crown Dependency located in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy, France. It is not part of the United Kingdom, but the British Crown is responsible for its defence and international representation. The capital is St Peter Port, a picturesque harbour town that serves as the island's commercial and administrative heart. The Bailiwick of Guernsey, the wider jurisdiction, includes the main island plus Alderney, Sark, Herm, and several smaller islets. The total population of the Bailiwick is approximately 65,000 people, the majority living on the main island. Guernsey has its own parliament, the States of Deliberation, its own legal system based on Norman customary law, and issues its own currency, the Guernsey pound, which is pegged to sterling. The island is a major international financial centre, with banking, insurance, investment funds, and private wealth management underpinning a prosperous economy. English and Guernsey French (a Norman dialect) are traditional languages, though English predominates today.

Geography and Landscape

Guernsey is a small island of approximately 65 square kilometres, lying roughly 50 kilometres west of the Normandy coast and about 120 kilometres south of the English coast. The island has a distinctive geography: the southern coast is characterised by dramatic cliffs, headlands, and rocky coves, while the northern half of the island is lower-lying, with sandy beaches and dunes. The interior is gently undulating agricultural land, historically known for the Guernsey cattle breed developed on the island. The island has a mild, maritime climate influenced by the Gulf Stream, with mild winters, warm summers, and significantly more sunshine than mainland Britain, making horticulture and flower growing historically important industries. Guernsey's coastline includes numerous bays, the most notable being Vazon Bay, Cobo Bay, and Rocquaine Bay on the west coast. The tidal range around Guernsey is among the highest in the world, dramatically altering the appearance of the coastline between high and low tide.

History

Guernsey has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of Neolithic and Bronze Age settlement. The island was part of the Duchy of Normandy and came under the English Crown following the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, when William the Conqueror held both Normandy and England. When the French King Philip II seized mainland Normandy from King John of England in 1204, Guernsey and the other Channel Islands chose to remain loyal to the English Crown, establishing their unique constitutional position as Crown Dependencies. This medieval arrangement forms the legal basis of the islands' status to this day. Guernsey has its own feudal and legal traditions rooted in Norman customary law. During the Second World War, Guernsey was occupied by German forces from 1940 to 1945, one of the few parts of the British Isles to be occupied. The occupation left a lasting cultural and historical imprint. Post-war, Guernsey developed its financial services sector from the 1960s onward, becoming one of the world's leading offshore finance centres.
