Earth's surface is just over 510 million square kilometres, of which about 29 percent is land. The rest is covered by sea and water. The ocean surface dominates the planet and affects climate, trade and communication for all peoples and nations.
The continents
The world is traditionally divided into seven continents: Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, North America, South America and Antarctica. Asia is by far the largest continent by area and population, while Antarctica is the smallest by population.
Africa and Asia are connected at Suez and diverge north and south into a large open sea. Europe connects to Asia as a peninsula to the west. North and South America are joined by the narrow Isthmus of Panama.
Subcontinents and larger cultural units
Within the continents there are subcontinents and cultural regions defined by geography, history and culture rather than strict geological boundaries. The Arabian Peninsula and India are clear examples of subcontinents with strong geographic demarcation.
Greenland is geographically part of North America but has historical and political ties to Europe. The Middle East and the Caribbean are cultural and geopolitical regions spanning parts of several continents. Central America serves as a bridge between North and South America with its own geographic and cultural character.
