About Singapore

Singapore is a sovereign city-state and island nation located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia. Despite covering just 733 square kilometres, it is home to approximately 5.9 million people and is one of the most densely populated places on earth. Singapore is a parliamentary republic and, under the People's Action Party which has governed since 1959, has maintained political stability that underpins its extraordinary economic success. Four official languages—English, Mandarin Chinese, Malay, and Tamil—reflect its multiethnic Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian population. Singapore is one of the world's leading financial centres, a major shipping and logistics hub, and home to one of the busiest container ports globally. Its GDP per capita ranks among the very highest in the world. The country is celebrated for its strict rule of law, low corruption, high-quality education, and exemplary urban planning. The integration of hawker culture, heritage temples, colonial architecture, and futuristic skyscrapers gives Singapore a unique urban identity.

Geography and Landscape

Singapore consists of one main island and approximately 63 smaller surrounding islands, situated just north of the equator at 1° North latitude. The main island is low-lying, with the highest point—Bukit Timah Hill—reaching only 163.6 metres. The terrain was originally tropical rainforest with mangrove swamps; today most of the island is urbanised, though Singapore has made exceptional efforts to retain green spaces. The Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and the Central Catchment Reserve protect remnant primary rainforest, and the Gardens by the Bay exemplify the city's "Garden City" ambition. Due to its equatorial location, Singapore has a hot and humid tropical climate with no distinct seasons, receiving abundant rainfall (about 2,340 mm annually) distributed fairly evenly throughout the year, with slightly heavier rains during the northeast monsoon season (November to January). Land reclamation has expanded Singapore's total area by roughly 25% since independence.

History

The island's recorded history begins in the thirteenth century when it was known as Temasek and was a part of the Srivijaya Empire. In 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles of the British East India Company established a trading post on the island, recognising its strategic position along vital shipping lanes. Singapore grew rapidly under British colonial rule, becoming a major regional entrepôt. The fall of Singapore to Japanese forces in February 1942—described by Churchill as "the worst disaster and largest capitulation in British history"—was a turning point. After the Japanese occupation (1942–1945), Singapore became a British Crown Colony and subsequently joined Malaysia in 1963. On 9 August 1965, Singapore separated from Malaysia and became an independent nation, an outcome Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew described as a "moment of anguish." Under Lee's leadership, Singapore transformed from a developing port city with high unemployment into one of the world's wealthiest and best-governed states—an achievement still studied globally as a model of development.
