About Åland Islands

The Åland Islands are an autonomous and demilitarised region of Finland, situated at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. The capital is Mariehamn, which is home to the majority of the archipelago's roughly 30,000 inhabitants. Although politically part of Finland, Åland is Swedish-speaking and enjoys a high degree of self-governance, with its own parliament, the lagting, and authority over many local matters including education, health, and transport. The islands issue their own postage stamps and have a distinct regional identity. Residents are exempt from Finnish military service. Åland joined the European Union alongside Finland in 1995 but retains certain tax exemptions that allow duty-free sales on ferries operating through its waters, making ferry tourism an important element of the local economy. Fishing, agriculture, and maritime trade also contribute significantly to the region's livelihood.

Geography and Landscape

The Åland archipelago consists of one main island, Fasta Åland, and more than 6,700 smaller islands, skerries, and rocks scattered across the Baltic Sea. The landscape is characterised by low-lying granite bedrock smoothed by glaciation, thin soils supporting mixed woodland, and extensive coastal inlets. The terrain rarely rises above 130 metres. The climate is milder than much of Finland thanks to the moderating influence of the surrounding sea, with relatively warm summers and ice that forms only in the coldest winters. The straits between the islands are navigable for much of the year, supporting a lively maritime culture. The archipelago is rich in birdlife, and the National Park of Åland protects significant stretches of the outer archipelago. Apple orchards thrive in sheltered parts of Fasta Åland, and the islands are known for their clean environment and distinctive rural character.

History

The islands have been inhabited since prehistoric times, with traces of settlement dating back more than 5,000 years. During the medieval period they formed part of the Swedish realm, and Swedish settlement established the language and culture that persist today. Following the Finnish War of 1808–09, Finland and Åland passed to Russian rule as an autonomous grand duchy. Russia fortified the islands but the fortifications were destroyed after the Crimean War, and the archipelago was demilitarised and neutralised under the 1856 Treaty of Paris. When Finland declared independence in 1917, Ålanders sought reunion with Sweden, but the League of Nations awarded sovereignty to Finland in 1921, guaranteeing the archipelago's autonomy, demilitarisation, and Swedish-language rights. During the Cold War the islands' neutral status was reinforced. Today Åland operates as a prosperous self-governing region with a strong maritime identity and close cultural ties to Sweden.
