About Barbados

Barbados is a small island nation located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, situated northeast of Trinidad and Tobago. With a population of approximately 280,000 people, it is one of the most densely populated countries in the world relative to its land area of just 430 square kilometres. The capital city is Bridgetown, which also serves as the country's main port and commercial hub. Barbados gained independence from the United Kingdom on 30 November 1966 and became a republic on 30 November 2021, with Dame Sandra Mason serving as its first President. The country operates as a parliamentary republic with a Prime Minister as head of government; Mia Mottley has held that office since 2018. Barbados has one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean, with a well-developed economy based on tourism, financial services, and light manufacturing. English is the official language, and the island's culture blends African, British, and Caribbean traditions. Bajans, as the people are known, are proud of their vibrant cultural heritage including calypso, cricket, and the rum industry.

Geography and Landscape

Barbados is the easternmost island in the Caribbean, lying about 168 kilometres east of Saint Vincent and roughly 435 kilometres northeast of Trinidad. The island is relatively flat compared to many Caribbean neighbours, formed primarily from coral limestone rather than volcanic activity. The interior features a series of low-lying terraces rising gently toward a central ridge, with the highest point being Mount Hillaby at 340 metres in the north-central parish of Saint Andrew. The southern and western coasts are characterised by calm, shallow turquoise waters and white sandy beaches, while the eastern Atlantic-facing coast is more rugged, with crashing surf and dramatic sea cliffs. The island has no major rivers but features numerous seasonal gullies that channel rainwater. The climate is tropical with a dry season from December to May and a wetter season from June to November. Trade winds from the northeast moderate temperatures year-round. Barbados lies just outside the main Caribbean hurricane belt, though it has experienced storms in the past.

History

Barbados was originally inhabited by the Arawak and later the Carib peoples. The island was visited by Spanish and Portuguese sailors in the early sixteenth century, with the Portuguese navigator Pedro a Campos believed to have named it "Os Barbados" (the bearded ones) around 1536, referring to the island's fig trees. English settlers arrived in 1627 and established a colony under the British Crown, quickly developing a plantation economy based on sugar cultivation and the transatlantic slave trade. By the late seventeenth century, Barbados was one of Britain's most valuable colonial possessions. The emancipation of enslaved people came in 1834, followed by an apprenticeship period ending in 1838. Political reform accelerated in the twentieth century, with universal adult suffrage introduced in 1950. The Barbados Labour Party leader Grantley Adams became the island's first Premier in 1954. Independence was achieved on 30 November 1966 under Prime Minister Errol Barrow. In November 2021, Barbados transitioned to a republic, removing the British monarch as head of state.
