About Montserrat

Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory located in the Leeward Islands of the eastern Caribbean Sea. Plymouth was the former capital, but it was largely destroyed and abandoned following volcanic activity that began in 1995; the de facto capital and main functioning settlement is now Brades, while Little Bay is being developed as a new capital. The island's population has declined dramatically from around 11,000 before the volcanic crisis to approximately 5,000 today, following mass emigration. As a British Overseas Territory, Montserrat is self-governing in internal matters with the United Kingdom responsible for defence and foreign affairs. The economy relies on public sector employment, construction related to rebuilding, and a modest tourism industry. Montserrat has a strong cultural identity, with a tradition of Irish heritage stemming from seventeenth-century Irish settlers, earning it the nickname "the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean." The East Caribbean dollar is the local currency.

Geography and Landscape

Montserrat covers approximately 102 square kilometres and is situated between Antigua and Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. The island is of volcanic origin and is dominated by the Soufrière Hills in the south, a volcanic complex that became dramatically active in July 1995. Prior to the eruption, the southern half of the island contained Plymouth and most of the population. The volcanic activity produced pyroclastic flows, ash falls, and lahars that buried Plymouth and rendered the entire southern zone permanently uninhabitable and an exclusion zone. The northern half of the island, by contrast, is greener and less affected, with the Centre Hills providing forested uplands and a protected nature reserve. Montserrat's coastline features black volcanic sand beaches alongside areas of pale sand. The remaining inhabited area offers striking views of the still-smouldering volcano. The climate is tropical, with a warm and wet season and a drier period during the northern winter months.

History

Montserrat was inhabited by Arawak and Carib peoples before European arrival. Christopher Columbus sighted the island in 1493 and named it after the monastery of Montserrat in Catalonia. British colonisation began in 1632, with many of the early settlers being Irish Catholics seeking religious tolerance, which gave Montserrat its distinct Irish cultural heritage. The island became a significant sugar-producing colony relying on enslaved African labour. Following the abolition of slavery in 1834, the economy gradually declined. The island also experienced severe hurricane damage on multiple occasions throughout its history. In the twentieth century, Montserrat gained modest fame as a recording location when Sir George Martin established AIR Studios there in 1979, attracting artists such as The Beatles members, Elton John, and The Rolling Stones. The volcanic eruption that began in 1995 fundamentally transformed the island, displacing the majority of its population and destroying much of the southern infrastructure, reshaping Montserrat's future in lasting ways.
