Fiji is an archipelagic nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, lying approximately 1,300 kilometres north of New Zealand. It comprises around 330 islands and 500 islets, of which roughly 110 are permanently inhabited. The total population is approximately 900,000, making it one of the larger Pacific island nations. The capital, Suva, located on the island of Viti Levu, is the country's political, economic, and cultural centre. Fiji gained independence from British colonial rule on 10 October 1970. The country's economy relies heavily on sugar production and tourism, with the latter contributing the largest share of GDP. Fiji is characterised by a complex ethnic division between indigenous iTaukei Fijians and Indo-Fijians, descendants of indentured labourers brought from India by British colonisers between 1879 and 1916. This ethnic tension has underpinned a history of political instability, including four military coups since 1987. Fiji re-established democratic governance in 2014 and has maintained relative stability since, with elections in 2022 producing a peaceful transfer of power.

Fiji's geography is dominated by two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, which together account for roughly 87% of the nation's total land area. Viti Levu, the largest, covers 10,429 square kilometres and hosts the capital Suva as well as the main international gateway, Nadi Airport. The islands are of volcanic origin, with rugged interior mountain ranges on the larger islands reaching over 1,300 metres. The terrain creates a pronounced windward-leeward divide: the southeastern coasts receive heavy rainfall and support lush rainforest, while the northwestern coasts lie in a rain shadow and are considerably drier. The Coral Coast and Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains in the west are renowned for white-sand beaches and clear turquoise waters that drive the tourism industry. Fiji sits within the Melanesian subregion and is situated near the Kermadec-Tonga Trench. The surrounding seas are part of the Coral Triangle, one of the most biodiverse marine environments on Earth, hosting extensive reef systems and diverse marine megafauna.

Fiji's islands were first settled by Austronesian peoples approximately 3,500 years ago, with the Lapita culture leaving characteristic pottery evidence across the archipelago. Melanesian migrations followed, and Fijian society developed into a complex system of chiefdoms and inter-island warfare. Dutch explorer Abel Tasman sighted the islands in 1643, and British captain James Cook visited in 1774. The early 19th century brought European traders, missionaries, and settlers, along with the introduction of firearms that intensified inter-tribal conflict. Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau, a paramount chief, emerged as the dominant leader and ceded Fiji to Britain in 1874, making it a Crown Colony. Between 1879 and 1916, over 60,000 indentured workers were brought from India, fundamentally reshaping Fiji's demographic composition. Independence came in 1970. Ethnic tensions exploded in the coup of 1987, led by Lieutenant Colonel Sitiveni Rabuka, followed by further coups in 2000 and 2006. The 2006 coup, led by Commodore Frank Bainimarama, eventually led to a new constitution and internationally monitored elections in 2014.
