About Djibouti

Djibouti is a small East African nation of approximately one million people, occupying a strategically vital position at the entrance to the Red Sea, where it meets the Gulf of Aden. The capital, also named Djibouti City, is home to the vast majority of the population and serves as the country's economic, political, and cultural centre. The government is a presidential republic; Ismail Omar Guelleh has served as president since 1999, following the long rule of his uncle Hassan Gouled Aptidon. Djibouti's economy is driven primarily by its port and logistics infrastructure. The country hosts several foreign military bases, including those of France, the United States, China, Japan, and Italy, reflecting its exceptional strategic importance. The Djibouti–Addis Ababa Railway connects the capital to the Ethiopian hinterland, channelling a significant share of landlocked Ethiopia's trade. Somali and Afar are the main spoken languages, while French and Arabic are official. The population is predominantly Muslim.

Geography and Landscape

Djibouti covers just 23,200 square kilometres and is one of the smallest countries in Africa. It is bordered by Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia to the west and south, and Somalia to the southeast, with coastlines on the Gulf of Tadjoura to the north and the Gulf of Aden to the east. The landscape is harsh and largely arid, characterised by volcanic rock, salt flats, and desert plains. Lake Assal, situated in a volcanic depression in the Danakil region, lies at 155 metres below sea level, making it the lowest point in Africa and one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth. The Goda Mountains in the north reach elevations above 1,700 metres and support relatively lush vegetation compared to the parched lowlands. The Day Forest National Park on the Goda Massif protects one of the last remnants of juniper forest in the Horn of Africa. Djibouti experiences an extremely hot and arid climate, with coastal temperatures regularly exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in summer. Rainfall is very scarce, averaging less than 150 millimetres per year in most of the country.

History

The territory of present-day Djibouti has been inhabited for millennia. The Afar and Issa Somali peoples are believed to have settled the region several thousand years ago. The coastal area was part of ancient trade networks linking the Arabian Peninsula, the Horn of Africa, and the Indian Ocean world. France established a coaling station at Obock in 1862 and gradually extended its influence, proclaiming the territory the French Territory of the Afars and Issas in 1967, after an earlier period as French Somaliland. A referendum on independence was held in May 1977, and Djibouti became independent on 27 June 1977, with Hassan Gouled Aptidon as its first president. The early decades were marked by ethnic tensions between the Afar and Issa communities, which erupted into a civil war between 1991 and 2001 before a peace agreement brought the Afar-dominated Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy into the government. Since then, Djibouti has maintained relative political stability while capitalising on its geographic position to attract foreign military presence and develop its port infrastructure into a major regional hub.
